From Zagreb to Dubrovnik is around 600 km – the whole length of Croatia, from the green north to the southern tip of Dalmatia. Driven straight, it takes about six and a half hours. Driven well, it is the most beautiful road trip in the country.
The route
The fastest way is the A1 motorway through Lika and Dalmatia to the end of the motorway near Ploče, then the coastal road south. Since July 2022 the Pelješac Bridge connects the mainland with the Pelješac peninsula, so the route no longer has to pass through the short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. That means no border crossing on the way to Dubrovnik and a more predictable journey time.
The best stops
- Krka National Park – waterfalls and wooden walkways, a short detour from the motorway. In the swimming season, check the park’s current rules.
- Šibenik – the Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO site built entirely of stone, and a maze of old-town lanes.
- Split – lunch on the Riva and a walk through Diocletian’s Palace.
- Makarska Riviera – pebble beaches under the Biokovo mountain, if you prefer the coastal road.
- Ston – medieval walls that climb the hills, salt pans still in use, and some of the best oysters and mussels in the Adriatic in nearby Mali Ston.
How to plan the day
With one or two stops, plan a full day: leave Zagreb early in the morning and arrive in Dubrovnik for dinner. If you want to see more, split the journey with a night in Split or Šibenik.
Driving yourself or with a driver?
It is a long day behind the wheel, with summer traffic, motorway tolls and parking in old towns where space is scarce. With a private transfer you sit back, watch the coast and stop where you like, and your luggage stays safely in the car while you explore.

Arriving in Dubrovnik
Cars cannot enter Dubrovnik’s walled Old Town. Your driver will take you as close as possible – usually Pile Gate or Ploče Gate – and help with your luggage. If you are flying home from Dubrovnik, the airport in Čilipi is about 30 minutes south of the city.
