About Trakošćan and Varaždin

Trakošćan Castle sits on a forested hill above an artificial lake in the north of Croatia. Rebuilt in the romantic style in the 19th century, it now houses a museum with original furniture, weapons and portraits of the Drašković family.

Varaždin was briefly the capital of Croatia in the 18th century and is known for its baroque palaces and churches, its fortress and its late-summer street festival, Špancirfest.

Tips from our drivers

  • Comfortable shoes: the path up to Trakošćan castle is short but steep.
  • Try štrukli, a cheese pastry dish from this region.
  • Late summer brings Špancirfest to Varaždin — ask us for dates.
  • Opening hours of the castle are shorter in winter; we plan around them.
